Stay at Tshahitsi Lodge in Upington, Northern Cape.

Originally known as Kharahais, bound by the Orange River and the Kalahari desert, Upington is the principal town and commercial, educational and social centre of the Green Kalahari, owing its prosperity to bountiful agriculture along the Orange River.

By uniting Reverend Christiaan Schroder’s mission station, Olyvenhoutsdrif and the Upington police station in 1871, a town was formed. At first, keeping the name of Olyvenhoutsdrif (‘Olive wood drift’) due to the large number of olivewood trees in the area, it was renamed Upington in 1898 after the Cape Colony’s attorney general at the time, Sir Thomas Upington.

Since then, the town has expanded rapidly and is now center of the Gordonia district.

I booked in at Tshahitsi Lodge and was truly surprised to have stumbled upon an absolute gem. I felt like a returning guest from the warm welcome received, and every staff member I came across was nothing short but amazing with how incredibly helpful they were.

Tshahitsi Lodge is part of the Northern Cape Famous Lodges group, and right on the edge of town as you enter Upington from Johannesburg / Olifantshoek. They offer 18 four-star, self catering chalets, each fully equipped with air-con, DStv, a workspace, as well as an inside/outside kitchen and entertainment area.

Breakfast is included in your stay and the on-site restaurant, Silver Spoon Bistro, serves an incredible breakfast buffet seven days a week which caters to every taste and diet preference.

They also offer a 5-star conference facility, should you choose Upington as your destination to meet up with some work associates.

They proudly cater for the whole family and truly go out of their way to make you feel as comfortable as possible during your stay. I can’t recommend making Tshahitsi Lodge your stopover if you ever find yourself passing through Upington.
