Stay at Jan Harmsgat Historic Farm & Country House in Swellendam.

Jan Harmsgat is set in a historic Cape Dutch farmstead near Swellendam. A mere 2-hour drive from Cape Town towards the Garden Route and Little Karoo, on the R60.

The wine cellar that lies in the heart of the property dates back to 1723, a testament to the farm’s rich past. In 1674, East of the current town of Bonnievale, on a farm nestled under the towering Langeberg Mountains, Johannes Harman Jansz Potgieter was born. Johannes married in 1714, and the farm appears on the grant of 1723 as Jan Harmansz Schat (treasure) from which it was apparently corrupted to Jan Harmsgat.

Today, guests are treated to 5-star elegance in that distinct ‘Overberg’ style. With breakfast included and a fine-dining restaurant on-site for dinner, they grow their own produce for the table. Just across the road, the 680 ha. farm is yours to explore and straddles the lush mountainous belt with its orchards of fruit, nut and olive trees is the source of its highly acclaimed preserves and produce. Indigenous wildlife such as Black Wildebeest, Springbuck, Grey Rheebuck and Ostriches are to be seen here, along with many smaller creatures and birds.

With the the original wooden floor, the room features a long-length king-size bed (can also be made up as twin beds), percale linen, air-conditioning, coffee and tea facilities and stocked mini bar. The en-suite bathroom with opulent bath, oversized shower, toilet and bidet also has underfloor heating. Flat screen TV’s with a selected DSTV package is featured in all rooms plus free Wi-Fi.

Thanks to the rain, we enjoyed one of their famous picnic spreads on the large porch area of our room. If the weather allows, I highly recommend booking one of their lunchtime picnics for an amazing spread of nibbles, baked goods and preserves, expertly prepared by chef Josh, usually set in one of their expansive orchards or under the trees out on the lawn.
