Stay at Eco Karoo Mountain Lodge, Free State.

Eco Karoo Lodge is situated on a farm called Knoffelfontein, 4200 hectares of pure Karoo bliss just outside the little town of Luckhoff in the Free State. It’s the perfect middle point between most main centres in South Africa, at only 190 km’s from Bloemfontein, 160 km's from Kimberley, and an easy 45 km detour en-route from Gauteng to Cape Town. Although, you probably won’t feel like leaving to a busy city after experiencing these endless plains.

The entire lodge is 100% off the grid, making it the perfect eco-friendly escape.

Embracing local craftmenship, the current owners, and third generation of Viljoens on the farm, set-out constructing the Eco Karoo Lodge utilising local skills, products, equipment and entrepreneurs extensively. From bricks made at a local quarry and sand from a nearby riverbed, to a team of builders, bricklayers, plasterers and stone wallers from all over the Free State, Northern Cape and even Lesotho. The construction was concluded without removing a single root of Karoo vegetation.

From the taps, lights, lamp shades, doors and beds to the reed awnings, fireplace, gabion walls and even the bar chairs, most of the interior was specifically designed and made by local entrepreneurs for Eco Karoo Lodge. All wood used in the interior came from a 60 year old pine tree that fell during a blistering Free State windstorm - they believe there is no better designer than nature itself.

The fully equipped, uniquely designed open air kitchen, braai and boma makes it the perfect spot for a group getaway. The lodge is fully self-catering, so bring all of your favourites along — you’ll have everything you need to cook an al fresco spread of your dreams. Wine is available to purchase at the lodge, but keep in mind that it’s cash-only. Wood and ice are also available to purchase on request.

Big glass sliding doors opens up the breathtaking lounge and dining room onto a beautiful 6 m infinity pool overlooking the great Karoo plains.

The lodge has 3 eco-suites that can accommodate up to 4 guests each, 12 guests in total. Each suite offers two rooms fitted with a king bed in one bedroom and two twin beds in another, en-suite bathroom, indoor and private outdoor mountain-view shower and each room has it’s own sunrise-facing patio. Which means you get to view those spectacular Karoo sunrises without leaving the comfort of your bed.

Included in your stay; free WiFi (just a note that it doesn’t reach the rooms, and is only available in the kitchen and lounge areas), and each room is fitted with plugs and USB points, a fireplace, and private patio.

Take a walk on one of the multiple hiking trails around the lodge, lounge in the pool, or experience the river bed’s perfect birdwatching spot between the reeds. The evenings offer prime stargazing in the crystal clear Karoo sky with unbelievable starry nights. There are also a few species of game to be spotted roaming around the lodge; Kudus, Waterbuck, Blessbuck, Oryx, Steenbok and many more small species including Warthogs.

Eco Karoo Lodge offers majestic scenery unlike anywhere else on earth - spectacular sunrises, endless horizons, surreal silence and the crisp, distinctive smell of the Karoo. The philosophy with the design was to embrace all of this. Every space, from bedrooms and bathrooms to the living room and kitchen, opens outdoors. All rooms face east over the same plains and there’s nothing quite like watching the Sun paint the sky in shades of pink and orange as it kisses the Moon goodnight.

This is the place where you can experience our breathtaking world and even yourself a little bit differently.
