A Sustainable Stay at Copia Eco Cabins.

With limited cell reception, no wifi or television, and the request to please use electricity wisely (due to the fact that the cabins run solely off solar energy), some might find it difficult to see how Copia translates to "abundance."

However, after only a single night at these Eco Cabins, I quickly come to learn just how much can be gained by "switching off".

Copia Eco Cabins in Botriver Valley

Tucked away in the Botrivier Valley, about 1.5 hours out of Cape Town, the Copia Eco Cabins proved to be the perfect destination for an off-the-grid, cozy girl's weekend getaway with go-to travel companion and fellow creative, Chelsea.

Now, don't let the term "off-the-grid" scare you away with scenes of muddy tents, canned beans over a fireplace or bearded men brushing their teeth with a cup of river water in hand, coming to mind.

On the contrary, it’s easy to forget that what you're sleeping in was once an old shipping container and it proved to be so refreshing to see how founder, Lucas, made sustainability work whilst not sacrificing on luxury, convenience or comfort.

Copia was an idea that started 3 years ago while scrolling around on a popular social website when I came across a picture of a used shipping container that someone had converted into an amazing living space. I was amazed at what they had achieved and I became obsessed with used container conversions and the endless possibilities, all while doing my little bit to recycle.

Chatting as we watched the sun go down from the hot tub out on the deck, a glass of wine with a view of the farmlands, was exchanged for a cup of tea in front of the fireplace, as soon as the Autumn air proved to get a bit chilly.

Aside from the most magical wood-fired hot tub and indoor fireplace, each of the three self-catering cabins also come equipped with basic supplies like wood, blitz, braai utensils (grid, tongs & potjie), bedding, towels, tea, coffee, sugar, salt & pepper, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and even basic first-aid supplies like plasters and headache tablets.

Our final morning saw us taking one last advantage of those incredible views of the valley with a brunch spread out on the deck. Be sure to stock up on some locally-sourced produce at one of the many farmstalls surrounding the area, as the fully-equipped kitchen proved to be the perfect place to prepare beautiful meals.

*Just note that the cabins run off solar power so there is no oven or microwave, but there is a 2 plate gas stove as well as a fridge/freezer.
