Blue Crane Farm Lodge.
90-minutes away from Cape Town, along the breathtaking Van Der Stel Pass, you'll find Blue Crane Farm Lodge tucked away between the Houwhoek mountains.
The lodge forms part of a working farm, Ou Meul, owned by the Engelke family. Owners, Bennie and Erika, believe in family above everything else and they wanted to create a home away from home to everyone who chooses to visit.
As keen birdwatchers, they chose to name each of the four cottages after one of the many bird species found in the area: Fish Eagle, Piet My Vrou, Suikerbekkie, and Woodpecker. The newly built self-catering, farm-style homes can accommodate 4 people each between the two comfortable bedrooms and a large, shared bathroom. The open plan kitchen and living area include a fully equipped kitchen, indoor braai/fireplace, and pizza oven. Each living area opens up onto an outside deck, with magnificent views of the valley. You'll have your own wood-fired hot tub and there's another outdoor braai facility with seating.
Of course, we had to take full advantage of the freshly baked bread and milk from the farm, delivered through a serving hatch located next to the kitchen door every morning and made a farm breakfast accompanied by gorgeous farm views.
Even though the cottages are the perfect spot to chill, entertain and cook up a storm, there's a whole lot to do in the area. The outdoor activities include hiking the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, flyfishing at Houwhoek, zip-lining with Cape Canopy Tour in Elgin and quad biking with SA Forest Adventures. If foodie experiences are more your thing you're going to want to try out some of Botrivier's local spots like Manny's Portugese or the local pizzeria, Shuntin Shed. There are also several wine farms in the area, like Beaumont Family Wines, Gabrielskloof Wine Estate and Wildekrans Wine Estate and the restaurants of Hermanus are a mere 35km away.
