An immune-boosting cacao elixir.

I’ve recently taken up the habit of not starting my day with coffee and cutting back on my three cups a day in general. This didn't come after some serious diagnosis or stress, I was just genuinely curious to see what the effect would be on my body if any at all.

With that being said, I think what I enjoy most about my morning cuppa was the ritual thereof and for the first few days I genuinely missed it (a cup of tea first thing in the morning just isn’t the same), so I came up with an alternative…this raw cacao elixir.


Now, if you’re wondering what an “elixir” is, it’s a warm herbal drink (designed to taste good!) that can be a delivery system for herbal medicine.

And after the first sip of this cacao mix, I might just never go back to reaching for my coffee plunger first thing again. It’s jam-packed with superfoods and I can fully admit that it wakes me up just as well as any dose of caffeine did. That’s because cacao does contain caffeine (about half that of a cup of coffee), and therefore will still get you going in the morning. However, it also contains crucial elements required to balance that caffeine, including the master calming mineral magnesium (so if you’re prone to a mid-morning energy crash after your first cup, this might be something to consider).

Let’s break down what I’ve put in it (a.k.a. nourishing with intention).

Cacao considered a super-food for its high nutrient and antioxidant profile. It also contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. Magnesium helps keep our hormones and mood balanced and our energy levels high, so it's a great alternative for anyone dealing with stress or anxiety. Plus, it’s considered an anti-depressant (a.k.a cacao boosts your mood!) as it’s packed with enzymes, antioxidants, and flavonoids, which can reduce stress, support blood sugar control and increase endorphins (our feel-good hormones). It’s also a good source of plant-based iron and supports blood flow to the brain and heart, allowing more oxygen to reach these areas.

Cacao is very nutrient dense,” says holistic nutritionist Rachelle Robinett. It’s high in antioxidants as well as nutrients like magnesium (which can help reduce stress), potassium, and iron. Cacao is also high in healthy fats to help us stay satiated and energized.

The point of an elixir is that it can be mixed with other medicinal herbs such as cinnamon, maca, and ashwagandha to support the adrenals, energy-levels, and hormones rather than deplete them. So I’ve also added Astragalus Powder for its immune-boosting properties.

Astragalus Root is known as a potent immune-boosting herb and disease fighter. It is an immunostimulant that can increase white blood cell count and stimulate the production of antibodies, this builds up bodily resistance to viruses and bacteria.

Cinnamon wards off sugar cravings by stabilizing blood sugar. It also aids in digestion by warming the intestinal tract (similar to ginger.)

Honey, but be sure it’s from your local area as local honey boosts the immune system (especially now as we’re heading into Spring). I get mine from one of our neighboring farms.

Pink Himalayan Salt creates an electro-light balance, balances pH, lowers blood pressure, can strengthen bones, and aid in metabolizing.



(makes 2 cups)

How to

Combine all ingredients in a stovetop pan, slowly bring to simmer while whisking vigorously to create a foam. Wait until the solid cacao butter has melted and pour it into a mug. Garnish with a dash of cinnamon and some flower blossoms on top. Serve immediately, take a moment and enjoy.
